Generally speaking the printer friendly versions have no background colour, and have images in a high enough resolution for typically desktop printing, either laser or inkjet. The screen versions are optimized for on screen viewing and have a lower contrast (ie. light grey background) or lower resolution images, particularly for issues prior to mid 2014.
